Fantastic book.
I took the advice and looked at the contents page, then flicked to the poem I felt I needed. It was great. I then wanted to continue reading so I went back to the contents and chose another. Another brilliant poem and piece of advice. I still couldn't put it down so I flicked through the pages quickly and stopped on a random page. The words in the poem spoke to my soul. I was so moved, I had to put the book down and journal. I have re-read it a few times since.
When I am ready, I will ask the book another question and open it to a random page, fully prepared to be speechless - spoken to by a letter with such brilliant magic.
This book is not just a book of letters, this book is filled with wisdom beyond words, it's a message from the universe, it's a communication from one heart to another.
Thank you for sharing it with the world; me and my soul are incredibly grateful.
When I first became aware of Gurm's artistry, I was certain that her superpower was her ability to draw thought-provoking images in a childlike manner and with colors that make the Rainbow smile with pride. Reading her new book, Letters from a Human, I have become convinced that Gurm has many superpowers that she reveals to us at her own pace. We get a glimpse of Gurm's superpowers through each letter. The best part is that the letters are from different writers, including 2020, Life, The Universe, and Me. This gives the reassurance that we humans are not alone on this journey we call living.
The simplicity and depth of this line—"…no one is your competition, only your inspiration," from the Dear Past Self letter—pierced through my façade of strength. How many of us spend countless hours comparing ourselves to others? Judging ourselves against their successes? Not knowing the machinations of what they had to go through to reach that level of success?
The Dear Me letters were the most poignant for me. Reading them felt like a highly skilled surgeon was slicing through my doubts, judgments, and fears that were diminishing my very existence. This surgical intervention revealed to me a version of me that I needed to see. It is with this new version of me that I can appreciate The Human's understanding that I, too, can find "love in God, family, friendships, creativity, and in my alone time."
Of all the superpowers Gurm gives us a glimpse into, vulnerability and gratitude are my favorites. It is through vulnerability that we are equipped to digest the shenanigans of both good and bad times. That vulnerability was in top form when it allowed The Human to howl at Difficult Days, saying, "OMG, will you just stop getting on my nerves? Seriously, what is your problem? What have I ever done to you?" This level of consciousness is what makes vulnerability such an asset. And if we work on acquiring the mindset of Gratitude, Gurm points out that “Nothing seems ‘difficult.’ Nothing seems ‘impossible.’”
I met Gurm through her artistic superpower, yet Letters from a Human is less about reading Gurm's words and more about hearing our own. The letters act as a mirror, reflecting not just Gurm’s vulnerabilities, but our own. Having been gently sliced open by the "Dear Me" letters and fortified by the voice of Gratitude, I know I will return to this book whenever I need to remember that my competition is only my inspiration. And if we listen closely enough, we will hear the kind things that the Universe has to say.
